The Translation Major enrolled its first cohort of students in 2015 and is now recognized as one of the high-level application-oriented majors. Leveraging the university’s strengths in engineering and technology, the major features a strong focus on industrial and scientific translation. It has established practical translation training centers and internship sites in collaboration with several professional translation companies. Grounded in foundational language training and characterized by scientific and technical translation and machine translation, the program aims to cultivate highly qualified talents with strong practical competence and innovative thinking. The major has 12 full-time faculty members, including 1 professor and 3 associate professors. 2 of the faculty members are PhD holders. In addition, three part-time instructors from translation companies contribute to the major, and renowned international scholars are regularly invited as visiting scholars to offer courses such as Translation of Classical Chinese Literature. In recent years, the major has seen growing academic exchanges both at home and abroad. Outstanding students have been granted opportunities to study as exchange students at leading universities in China and abroad. The program has also made continuous efforts to expand domestic and international training bases, offering opportunities for paid summer internships for students seeking further study, employment, or translation practice in English-speaking countries. In 2017, the program launched an MTI (Master of Translation and Interpreting) education track. In 2019, the Advanced English course was recognized as a Provincial First-class Undergraduate Course in Shandong Province.
