The Major of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages was launched in 2012 and listed as a university-level, high-standard applied major under construction. This major strives to cultivate high-level, application-oriented, interdisciplinary, and international professionals. Students will acquire solid foundational knowledge of the Chinese language, develop a sound foundation in humanities, and master skills in second language teaching, intercultural communication, and cross-cultural communication. Graduates are competent for Chinese language teaching in educational institutions at home and abroad, as well as professional positions in government departments, international organizations and institutions engaged in international cooperation, press and publishing organizations, and other entities.

The major currently has 9 full-time teachers, including 1 professor and 4 associate professors, among whom 7 hold doctoral degrees. The faculty team is well equipped to support high-quality teaching, academic research, and student development.

In addition, the major undertakes the training of international exchange students and overseas students, with more than 70 students trained in total so far.

Major Features: The major offers practical courses on traditional Chinese culture, including calligraphy, paper-cutting, Chinese tea culture, and Tai Chi. These courses enable students to learn the origins, development and characteristics of traditional Chinese arts. On this basis, students’ ability to appreciate traditional Chinese arts will be further enhanced, so that they are able to deliver relevant art courses in the practice of teaching Chinese to foreign learners.

Career Prospects: Graduates of this major enjoy great potential for further postgraduate studies. In recent years, the postgraduate admission rate has remained at around 25%. A number of graduates have pursued advanced studies at prestigious universities such as Beijing Normal University, Renmin University of China and Beijing Language and Culture University. Graduates of this major enjoy broad employment prospects. Most graduates work in large and medium-sized cities including Beijing, Shenzhen, Jinan and Qingdao, engaging in teaching Chinese as a foreign language, primary and secondary education, administrative and communication-related positions, cultural exchange and other related fields. Some graduates have successfully secured the position in the civil service or taken positions in public institutions.

Length of Schooling: The standard duration of study is four years, with a flexible study period of three to eight years.
