English version

The English major was launched in 2001. It has been recognized as a University-level Featured Undergraduate Program and a key program supported by the Shandong Provincial Featured Universities Project. In 2019, it was approved as a Provincial First-class Undergraduate Program in Shandong, and in 2022, it was selected as a national first-class undergraduate program. Leveraging the university’s strengths in engineering and addressing the national strategic need for international communication capacity, the program integrates regional and country-specific studies with cross-cultural communication training. It focuses on two core directions—Country Studies and Global Communication—to cultivate students’ solid English proficiency and competence in international affairs. The program adopts the core educational principle of “mastering languages, understanding countries, and excelling in specialized fields”. It aims to produce highly qualified graduates and globally competent language professionals who are patriotic, globally minded, linguistically proficient, interculturally competent, and knowledgeable about country-specific contexts and international rules. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in international affairs and global communication and are capable of providing professional support for regional technological development and the global expansion of industries. The program has 23 full-time faculty members, including 1 doctoral supervisor, 3 professors, 9 associate professors, and 13 PhD holders. Distinguished international professors are regularly invited as visiting scholars to teach courses in literature, culture, writing, and second language acquisition. Two-thirds of the faculty have international visiting experience. Building on the university’s engineering strengths, the major offers an “English+” interdisciplinary training model that integrates language competence, cross-disciplinary knowledge, and professional skills. A distinctive “Telling China’s Story” extracurricular program provides students with hands-on experience in international communication. Through a systematic curriculum and one-on-one mentoring, the major fully supports students’ development.

Further Study and Career Prospects: Graduates have been admitted to universities included in the “Double World-Class Projects” and renowned international institutions, including Fudan University, Renmin University of China, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Shanghai International Studies University, and Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. The postgraduate admission rate has consistently remained above 30%. In 2026, the postgraduate admission rate for English majors reached 35%. English majors enjoy diverse career prospects. Graduates are well-suited for positions in diplomacy, foreign affairs, international organizations, think tanks, multinational corporations, culture, education, publishing, and media. Specific roles include translation, teaching, management, cross-cultural exchange, and academic research. Graduates have become university educators, diplomats at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, business managers, and journalists at CCTV.
